Introduction

The average life expectancy of Australian males is 83 years old. While how long we live life is significant, the quality of the life we lived is of equal importance. For some individuals, living a full life means bringing offspring into the world while for others it's achieving the state of complete mental, physical and social well-being.

The inability to achieve sexual fulfilment is a major concern among men. Andrology, the branch of medicine that specialises in men's health also deals with reproductive health and sexual dysfunction. While impotence can be frustrating, there are several treatments available that may help you.

Learn about the different areas of andrology below and how Dr Kim can help you:

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (or impotence) is a man’s inability to achieve or maintain an erection that allows penetrative sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction can have multiple causes such as physical (vessels - arteries and veins and nerves), psychological or a mixture of both.

Treatments for erectile dysfunction include medications given orally (usually tablets), counselling, vacuum penile pump devices, injections directly into the penis, and penile prosthetic implants.

Dr. Kim’s key interests include erectile dysfunction and ejaculation disorders. She is also a lead investigator in new research to look into Low intensity external shockwave therapy to penis.

Penile Implant

Erectile dysfunction (ED) are more common than you think, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. One of the most effective treatments for ED is penile implants. These are devices placed inside the penis to allow men with erectile dysfunction to get an erection.

Penile implants are typically recommended after other treatments for ED fail. There are several types of implants and the type used will depend on the needs and preferences of the man as well as factors like body size, medical history and overall health and well-being.

Adult Circumcision

The foreskin is the sleeve of loose skin which covers the bulb end of the penis (the glans). One end of the sleeve grows from the base of the glans. The other end lies freely over the glans to protect it.

The most common medical reasons are frequent infections or scarring of the foreskin, a condition known as BXO or Lichen Sclerosis. This can result in the foreskin becoming tight and unable to retract with erections. Intercourse can become painful. Medical treatment with creams can be tried and is often successful but often men “suffer in silence”.

Circumcision often is a definitive treatment option for the listed problems above.

Frenuloplasty

Sometimes the foreskin is very tightly fixed to the undersurface of the penis or the frenulum. This condition is called Frenulum Breve and can cause discomfort and sometimes pain or minor bleeding during intercourse.

Frenuloplasty can be attempted for a man with tight frenulum before offering more invasive circumcision. It is a quick and painless procedure that helps release the tightness in the frenulum. Discomfort can be expected on the day of the procedure but most patients will be fully healed and back to normal after a few weeks.

Ejaculatory Dysfunction

For men, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory problems are the most common sexual difficulties. Treatment for ejaculatory dysfunction (premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, painful ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation or no ejaculation) is less established than erectile dysfunction treatment. However, Dr. Kim can offer up to date various treatment options for all group with ejaculatory dysfunction.

Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome

Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome is characterised by testicular pain, penile tip pain and perineal and groin pain lasting longer than 3 months without the evidence of a urinary tract infection. Dr. Kim can carry out a comprehensive assessment to determine its cause and provide multidisciplinary team treatment including pelvic floor physiotherapy, pain team and Microsurgical spermatic cord denervation (MDSC).
